Job Description

Team’s Mission / Work Responsibilities

The AI/LLM Team’s mission is focused on two core pillars, "building" and "enabling" – delivering new AI-driven features and user experiences to maximize the impact of Mercari's business, as well as utilizing AI technologies to enhance productivity across the entire Mercari Group. We do this both through independent initiatives owned by our team, as well as by horizontally collaborating with product and engineering teams across the entire organization.

In this position you will play a pivotal role in bridging high-level strategy with tactical execution. Your responsibilities will include managing our product team, overseeing budgets and contracts, and facilitating cross-functional alignment, especially in a bilingual setting. You will work closely with the team’s and company’s leadership on vision and strategy while ensuring smooth operations and delivery of impactful AI/LLM solutions across the entire Mercari Group.


Responsibilities

Specific work responsibilities include the following:

  • Managing, mentoring and enabling a team of product managers within the AI/LLM division
  • Overseeing budgeting and contract management for AI/LLM initiatives
  • Facilitating cross-team alignment and stakeholder management, particularly across multilingual teams 
  • Establishing and maintaining effective processes that allow the team to deliver effectively and innovate rapidly
  • Collaborating with the AI/LLM leadership to develop and implement strategic vision and research AI/LLM trends and technologies to help the team make appropriate decisions
  • Planning, developing, and supporting the application of AI/LLM technologies in Mercari Group's services and internal tools

Unique and Bold Challenges

  • In this position, you will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between high-level strategy and day-to-day product management, enabling the AI/LLM leadership to focus on vision while ensuring smooth execution.
  • You will be responsible for managing resources and budgets across multiple AI/LLM initiatives, balancing the needs of various projects and stakeholders.
  • As a key communicator between multilingual and cross-functional teams, you will facilitate collaboration and ensure alignment across diverse groups within Mercari.
  • You will have the opportunity to shape the direction of AI/LLM applications across Mercari Group's businesses, influencing products used by millions of people.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Shared belief in the mission and values of Mercari Group and its various companies
  • Five or more years of product management experience in products or services for the internet or smartphone industries, with at least two years in a leadership role
  • Fluency in both Japanese and English, with excellent communication skills in both languages
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies, business strategy, and product development
  • Experience in budget management and contract negotiations
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor teams of product managers
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience in cross-functional and cross-cultural environments
  • Adaptability and agility in a fast-paced, constantly evolving technology landscape

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or equivalent business education/experience
  • Experience with software development as an engineer
  • Background in managing generative AI/LLM-related products
  • Experience in founding or managing a startup or venture company
  • Track record of successful product launches from conception to release

Language Requirements

  • English: Proficient (CEFR - C1) required
  • Japanese: Proficient (CEFR - C1) required

Working Conditions

Employment Status

Full-time

  • Probationary period: First 3 months after joining the company. (During this period your contract conditions will be the same as that of a permanent employee.)

Office

Roppongi

  • Smoking is prohibited within our offices
  • Mercari has introduced a work style policy called “Your Choice.” Each member is free to choose whether they want to work in the office or work fully remote. *Exceptions made for certain kinds of work.

Work Hours

  • Full flextime (no “core time” or “flex time”)
    *Does not apply to all positions

Holidays

  • Two days off per week (as well as national holidays, New Year's break, etc.)
  • Paid leave, congratulatory and bereavement leave, relax days, sick leave

Salary

  • Annual salary paid in 12 monthly installments (including fixed overtime allowance)
  • Based on skills, experience, and abilities
  • Reviewed twice a year
